MARRIAGES - CHRIST CHURCH NEWCASTLE

During  this decade there were 250 marriages performed at  Christ Church,  just
two  more than for  the  previous  decade,  on average about two marriages
every month.

The information recorded for each marriage is as follows:
               date
               groom
                    family name
                    Christian name
                    year and ship of arrival
civil status at time of marriage
                    age at marriage
                    parish
               bride
                    family name
                    Christian name
                    year and ship of arrival
civil status at time of marriage
                    age at marriage
                    parish
               consent given by
               officiating minister
               reference number

The marriages are listed in chronological order.

Post 1826 all parishes were required to record all marriages on a standardized
printed  form,  which  contained   the   following information:  register  entry
number, family name  and  Christian name  of both bride and groom, residant parish
of the  bride  and groom, date of marriage, who gave consent to the marriage
and the officiating  minister. Information recorded on the  register  but not
included  here includes the names of the  witnesses  to  the marriage  (Interested
readers are urged to consult  the  original register for this information).

It should be pointed out that 'year and ship of arrival',  'civil status at time
of marriage' and 'age at marriage' for both  bride and groom are all "value added"
additons researched by this  work to complement the church register.

The  marriage register occasionally recorded the civil status  of the  parties
and occasionally for serving convicts their ship  of arrival (but not the year).

With regard to the grooms 218 (87%) have been identified and  the brides  219
(88%)  have  been identified.  The  consent  of  the Governor was required in
206 cases (82%).

The Newcastle Family History Society's "Christ Church, Newcastle, NSW,
1804-1900, Transcriptions and Indexes of Baptism,  Marriage and  Burial
Registers"  was  also  most  helpful  in   providing information.

The Reverend Charles Pleydell Neale Wilton was appointed chaplain at  Newcastle
from 1831 and was to remain in this  parish  until his  death  in 1859. He performed
his first  marriage  at  Christ Church  on the 4th July 1831. The Rev. William
Cowper  performed one  marriage  in 1833, the Rev. R Taylor one in 1837,  the
Rev. George  Rusden  one in 1839 and the Rev. Charles Spencer  two  in 1839  (one
of which was the Rev. Wilton's own  marriage  in  the parish) plus one in 1840.

The reference number would direct the reader to the entry in  the original  parish
register. In this instance the numbers run  from B093 to B302 at the end of 1838.
In 1839 the numbering system  of marriages reverted to "1" with C001 until C038
at the end of 1840.

To  locate an entry on this list; firstly an alphabetical  search on  the name
would be made on Lists 3 or 4 using code "CCN"  from which the date of marriage
would be retrieved, secondly using the appropriate  date,  the marriage would
then be  located  on  this list.
