MARRIAGES - CATHOLIC OTHER CHURCHES

This list records 12 Catholic churches and parishes all of  which were
established during the decade 1831 to 1840 and all of  which recorded
less than fifty marriages in their  registers.  However when combined
these churches and parishes totalled 120 marriages. Unfortunately only
six parish registers have been located at this time and St Francis
Melbourne's is not complete.

The churches and parishes listed are as follows, arranged by date of establishment:
   22 Apr 1838:St Johns Campbelltown Roman Catholic {SJCR}
   17 Sep 1839:St Augustines Yass {YASR}
    4 Nov 1839:Norfolk Island {NK-I}
    3 Oct 1840:St Josephs MacDonald River (Co. Hunter) {SJMc}
   10 Oct 1840:St Nicholas Penrith {SNP}
   25 Oct 1840:St Francis Melbourne, Port Phillip District {SF-M}
          1835:Catholic Parish of Berrima {BERR}
          1836:Catholic Parish of: Illawarra; Wollongong {ILLA}
          1837:St Michaels: Bathurst; Kelso (Co. Bathurst) {SMB}
          1838:Catholic Parish of: Newcastle; Raymond Terrace {N-RT}
          1840:Catholic Parish of Goulburn {GOUL}
          1840:St James Sydney Catholic {SJSR}

The information recorded for each marriage is as follows:
               date
               groom
                    family name
                    Christian name
                    year and ship of arrival
                    civil status at time of marriage
                    age at marriage
                    parish
               bride
                    family name
                    Christian name
                    year and ship of arrival
                    civil status at time of marriage
                    age at marriage
                    parish
               consent given by
               officiating minister
               reference number

The  marriages  within  each  church and  parish  are  listed  in
chronological order.

All  the officiating ministers are listed at the end of  the  web page,
of whom there are nine.

Of  the grooms, 48 (42%) have been identified and for the  brides 52
(46%). The consent of the Governor was required in  27  cases (24%).

The reference number would direct the reader to the entry in  the
original  parish register. As explained in the case of  St  Marys Sydney
the State Archives reference numbers have  been  retained for this
parish.

There  were  six marriages in the State Archives  Pioneer  Series file
which  has  no entry on this parish register.  It  is  very likely
that they result from typographical errors and relate  to post 1840
marriages.

To  locate an entry on this list; firstly an alphabetical  search on
the  name  would be made on Lists 3 or 4  using  parish  code listed
in the table above from which the date of marriage  would be  retrieved,
secondly using the appropriate date, the  marriage would then be
located on this list.
