First Fleeter Gravesite Plaque Ceremonies — 1976 – 2024

Since 1976 a key activity of the Fellowship has been the location and identification of graves of First Fleeters.

With the consent of the descendants and the burial place administrators, a Fellowship bronze plaque is attached to the tombstone.

An unveiling dedication ceremony follows in the context of a descendants’ family reunion.

In certain situations where a burial site is known, but no tombstone has survived, a ‘Commemorative’ plaque is affixed in a prominent location at the burial site.

A very big Thank-You and Acknowledgement must go to the late Doug Oakes (1930-2001) FF#45 - FF’s John Small & Mary Parker.

Doug was responsible, as Convener Plaques Committee, for the placing of the first 114 Plaques from 1976 to 2001.

The search for more gravesites goes on.

Meanwhile the 125 plaques, in the Table below, have been placed up until 2024: 101 of these were for People and 24 were for Site Commemorations.

There is a more detailed description and stories of the Fellowship’s Plaque

Ceremonies available in ‘Dispatched Downunder- Tracing the Last Resting Place of the First Fleeters’ by Ron Withington c FFF2013

Available from our "Shop" page on the website.

First Fleeters with No Known Grave

There are 692 people who arrived in January 1788 who have no known burial site. For a list of those with unknown burial sites click HERE.

The list indicates that nearly 100 emancipated Convicts of the total 692 First Fleet arrivals with unknown burial places had left the Colony. Many returned to England, while others were headed for India, Bengal and China. Some of the Convicts in the 692 had absconded and possibly stowed away on ships to escape.

From the list, it can be seen that over 100 Marines and Family left the Colony on the Gorgon in 1791 - two emancipated Convicts were on  also on the Gorgon and were buried at sea.. About 13 emancipated Convicts left the Colony on the Kitty in 1793. The Kitty had previously transported Convicts to the Colony, eg in 1792.

Additionally, there were four emancipated Convicts with known burial sites overseas - 2 in England and 2 in India according to Ron Withington's Dispatched Downunder.

Note - The list in the pdf'd spreadsheet was  compiled from a number reputable sources, and does not include the names of those who did not arrive. If a record of their death was found  their name was not included in this list. Only those whose details of death and or burial are unknown remain on this list. Of the 692 names on this list, 464 left the colony; therefore 228 died at unknown locations although probably died in Australia. The only First Fleeter found to have been buried in what is now Victoria is - thus far -  John McCarty. The spreadsheet on the website of The First Fleet Fellowship of Victoria shows no other First Fleeters buried in Victoria.
